Just Right Literacy
A parent’s guide to understanding elementary school literacy practices and supporting your individual child at home.
Just Right means your child is getting the reading and writing instruction that is just right for them. We know the saying from every parenting book we read during those early years, “Every child is an individual and will develop at their own pace.” While it infuriated us then, when we were desperate to know whether our newborns were sleeping, eating, or talking enough… it is the truth. The same goes for reading and writing development. Each child develops their reading and writing skills at varying rates and it is important to provide the just right forms of intervention and support at the right times. As parents, it is our job to seek best practices to foster our child’s literacy development at home with the use of just right books and just right support.
As a parent, educator, school administrator, and literacy consultant I have an inside look into what makes a good literacy program and what supports children need at home. I realize that not all parents know what questions to ask or how to best support their individual child. Just Right Literacy will provide insight into what current literacy practices are happening in schools and things to think about when helping your child at home.
Lesson #1: Every Child is an individual and needs their own just right support.
